Question: Over the course of treatment for your back / neck problem. how satisfied were you with your overall medical care in our hospital?

SpineTANGO shows that overall PROM for surgery was 96.0% for Mr Yasin's patients and 85.9% for all other surgeons within the same institution.

Though on the surface, this would appear that outcomes are better for Mr Yasin's patients, the truth is that such a measure is, at best a crude indicator. Factors such as patient selection, revision procedures, co-morbidities etc mean that, the pooled results for all surgeons may in fact be skewed downwards.

Therefore, our conclusion is that the outcomes demonstrate that Mr Yasin's patient outcomes are at least equal to other surgeons within the same institution for index procedures.

A negative surgical outcome is any detrimental effect of surgery. There are 3 types with complications being one.

Mr Yasin ensures his outcome measures are submitted to ensure he is doing the best for his patients. This page summarises his results.

*Outcome data may not reflect the complexity of surgery and patient factors. The Surgeon may not be the only related variable. Inaccuracies of coding and data submission are not the sole responsibility of the Surgeon and can skew data.

Complication Rates

Measuring outcomes is important as it ensures surgeons can improve quality and safety. They also highlight any problems with the surgeon, the team, particular group of patients or the hospital. It is the only way to ensure patients are getting the best care.

Undesirable Effect of Surgery

This is an expected effect of the surgery i.e. stiffness after a fusion procedure.

Failure of Surgery

This is a failure of surgery to achieve results i.e. persistent sciatica after discectomy.

Complication

This is a recognised negative outcome that is not part of the normal intra- or post-operative  experience i.e. spinal cord injury.

This reflects the overall healthcare journey experience and not surgical outcome.

A patient may have a poor healthcare experience, despite a good surgical outcome.

Dr Foster collects data for all healthcare episodes in Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust. It provides data sheets for each consultant.
